VoIP - what is it and how does it work?
The Basics
VoIP is putting phone calls over Internet connections, instead of traditional fixed telephone lines. This enables a host of new and low-cost services.
How does it work?
First, you need a VoIP phone, and a VoIP account at a service provider like Switchconnect. You then configure the phone to connect to our VoIP server using your username and password. Once it's been set up, you can then use your VoIP phone anywhere that has an Internet connection, regardless of who provides the connection or where in the world you happen to be.
Total portability
Imagine if you could pick up your office desk phone, get on a plane to Hong Kong or the USA, and when you arrived, just plug it into a local phone socket and be able to make and receive calls, using your UK number, just as if you were still sitting at your desk? With VoIP you can do that.

Because your VoIP phone will work from anywhere with an Internet connection, and any calls you make are counted, for phone billing purposes, as coming from our VoIP servers in London, you can make calls to business associates, or family members, entirely at UK phone prices, even if you're thousands of miles away from the UK when you make them.
Use a wide range of devices to make calls
As well as desk VoIP phones, you can also connect to VoIP services using an app on your smartphone or tablet, or a "softphone" running on your tablet or computer. So you don't need to actually carry your desk phone with you to gain the benefits that VoIP can offer.

VoIP services from Switchconnect
Basic VoIP enabled number
For a one-off £10 upgrade fee, you can enable VoIP services on any Switchconnect number, and then use a VoIP phone to connect to our service and make and receive calls using your number. You can still specify traditional phones as well as VoIP in your number's routing, so if you are without Internet facilities (on a flight say) then you can arrange for your number to fall-back to your mobile, office reception number, or another phone. But when you do have Internet access, you can make massive savings on placing telephone calls compared to the costs of using a mobile, especially if you are abroad at the time.
